Hypnotherapy, hypnosis and hypnotism are often considered by people in the same breath.
Hypnosis is the state of mind and body that a person experiences during a hypnotherapy session. If you like,
it is the use of hypnosis, applied in a therapeutic way that gives us hypnotherapy.
Hypnotism, refers to the use of the state of hypnosis, also called “trance”. Although it can refer also to the use
of trance in a therapy session it also can include its use for non-therapeutic reasons such as amusement or entertainment.
Hypnotherapy is used to help people just like psychotherapy and counselling. The difference though is that psychotherapy and counselling tend to be considered long-term therapies. Sessions for these may occur every week for years and sometimes more than once a week.
Hypnotherapy is considered a brief therapy and it would be unusual for the number of sessions to extend beyond 12 and the norm would ordinarily be between 2 and 8. For stopping smoking, most hypnotherapists will provide help in just one slightly extended session of hypnotherapy.
