Fibromyalgia Symptoms Pain Relief - London

fibromyalgia symptoms pain Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a disorder that brings a sense of pain and fatigue. It includes the brain and nervous system and its symptoms can be felt in any part of the body. Typically a lack of energy couple with sensations of pain. Currently there is no known cure for FMS. Fibromyalgia refers to the fibrous tissues in the body (fibro) and pain (myalgia).

Some consider that fibromyalgia is similar to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS, formerly known as ME) in nature but with the extra symptom of pain. The soft tissues in the body; ligaments, tendons and muscles are the parts where any pain is mostly experienced. Usually a person with FMS will have a sense of pain in their entire body and not necessarily in an isolated area. Muscles can also give off involuntary twitches.

Fibromyalgia - Who Gets It?

As with many disorders, there are certain personality traits that are common. For the person with Fibromyalgia, it has been noted there seems to be a connection with being hard-working, driven, constantly on the go, ambitious, competitive and may even seek stressful situations or experiences. Before FMS is diagnosed they are less likely to admit to being stressed and recognising that they need to slow down and relax more. Indeed the thought of slowing down may produce stress. These personality descriptions are general and you may or may not recognise yourself in them as there are always exceptions.

Certain mood disorders are also noticed in Fibromyalgia patients. This may mean that there has been evidence of depression which may not have been dealt with early enough. They may be emotionally vulnerable and hurt easily by other people. This may lead to them being people pleases and doing too much for others. Getting emotionally upset can start an FM episode and they are then forced to rest. Some studies have noticed that women tend to get fibromyalgia in greater numbers in men. Also that it can affect people of any age.

Fibromyalgia Treatments

Currently without a cure available for FMS the focus of treatment is on managing FMS and reducing symptoms. Fibromyalgia is often treated with a mixture of prescriptive medicines, complementary therapies including hypnotherapy and alterations to lifestyle are encouraged. Anti-depressants for mood swings, and paracetamol and/or codiene for pain relief. FMS patients need to discover what works for them as individuals as not all sufferers react identically. Sometimes drugs to aid muscle relaxation and sleeping pills are used to help relieve muscle tension and to resolve insomnia.

Fibromyalgia and Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis has long been seen as a way to help relieve stress and anxiety. When someone feels calmer and more relaxed they are likely to experience a corresponding boost in mood and coping ability. For some hypnotherapy provides release from past emotional hurts that may have been part of the causes (stress, anxiety) of the FMS. Learning self hypnosis is a vital part of taking control of pain, stress, anxiety and other isues connected with FMS.
